Defining the height and cross-sections of ventilation openings in the transformer room In general, where a natural cooling system is used, the purpose of the ventilation openings is to disperse - by natural convection - the heat generated by total transformer losses during operation. A good ventilation system will allow fresh air to circulate freely around the transformer, which should be placed at least 200 mm from all solid walls. The height and cross-sections of the ventilation openings will depend on the total volume of heat loss to be evacuated (linked to the transformer load and the other equipment in the room), and on the altitude and annual average ambient temperature of the transformer room.
